If a warm breeze could play guitar, it would sound like Jack Johnson. Musicians are often influenced by the place they’re from, and Jack Johnson’s poppy acoustic rock captures the mood of a sunny, warm place like Hawaii. Johnson grew up on the islands, but his music is helping the whole world relax these days. Listen to Marni and Beren talk about his new album.

Marni: He’s still around. He’s got a new album out called Sleep Through the Static.
Beren: Is it good?
Marni: I was actually listening to it a little bit. It’s good for what it is. I don’t necessarily…If I want to listen to music, I don’t think, like, mellow guitar…
Beren: That’s my problem with Brushfire Fairytales. I think that’s the name of his first album. There’s a couple of songs I like, but it’s so mellow.
Marni: You have to be in the mood for it.
Beren: It’s beyond laid back. With the flip flops. Bare feet.
Marni: I actually had an encounter with him once and he was very, very nice.
Beren: You met Jack Johnson?
Marni: I met Jack Johnson once a long time ago and he’s a very, very nice guy. I catered for him and I stole juice from his dressing room. He’s a surfer. That’s a big passion of his. And he actually wanted to be a pro surfer, but he got into a really bad accident.
Beren: He got into a bad accident.
Marni: He got into an accident in the competition and he got disqualified and just picked up the…well, I think he’d been playing guitar, but you know, he went that route, and so I have a lot of respect for him.
Beren: He keeps it mellow.
Marni: He keeps it mellow.

Discussion
Marni has heard a little bit of Jack Johnson’s new album, and she says it’s good. But as with all of his music, you have be in a particularly carefree, relaxed mood to listen to it. Beren compares that mood to wearing sandals or walking around without shoes on.
It isn’t just Jack Johnson’s music that’s nice. He’s a nice guy too. Marni met him once. She has a lot of respect for him because even after his first career as a surfer was ended by an injury, Johnson made a career of music.
If you were to make music to reflect the place you’re from, what would it sound like?
