James Murphy, the brains behind LCD Soundsystem, has been in bands since he was 12 years old. He’s 40 now, and he still hasn’t lost his edge, even though he wrote a song about doing just that back in 2002.
LCD Soundsystem’s songs combine dance, rock, and punk music. Their newest album, This Is It, made it to the top ten charts. Jeff recently saw LCD Soundsystem perform live. Listen to him tell Devan about the show.

Jeff: What’s up with James Murphy’s brainchild, LCD Soundsystem?
Devan: Oh, I love them. You know, it’s this dance music project of this guy who…he’s forty now, and he has all these young kids just eating up what he’s selling, and a lot of his songs are about being middle aged and like going through that crisis of being in your late thirties/early forties and feeling like he’s losing his edge to kids that are younger and cooler. But yet these are the same kids that are putting him on the top ten music charts.
Jeff: I actually just saw LCD Soundsystem last Saturday. It was pretty interesting.
Devan: Does he still put on a pretty energetic live show even though he’s a little bit older?
Jeff: I thought it was great. The crowd was interesting. A bunch of hipsters there, you know, the whole thing, tight pants, flashy shoes. It’s kind of a different experience to see a large venue like that sold out. I think he’s doing pretty well for himself.
Devan: He still has his edge. He’s still pretty hip.

Discussion
Devan loves the band LCD Soundsystem. Even though James Murphy, who created the band, is 40, a lot of young hipsters think he’s cool. Even though he has a song called “Losing Your Edge,” about getting older and feeling uncool, he still hasn’t lost his edge.
Jeff saw LCD Soundsystem perform live, and he was impressed. The show was sold out. Everyone in the crowd was doing their best to look cool. Jeff thought James Murphy put on a fun and exciting show.
Do you think you will lose your edge when you get older? Do you know anyone who is still edgy despite his or her age?
