Scientists have found some surprising connections between certain scents and people’s feelings. The smell of lemon, for instance, makes us feel healthier. Lavender calms us, while eucalyptus makes us feel more awake.
For years, perfume makers have been trying to find the magic combination of scents that will make their customers feel beautiful and attractive. But for some, no perfume will ever be anything but stinky.
Marni can’t stand perfume. Hear Amy try to convince her that perfume is sexy, not stinky.

Amy: Do you like this new perfume, Marni? Here, smell.
Marni: No. I have to be really honest with you, I really dislike perfume and cologne. I just…I just think it’s so overwhelming.
Amy: Really? But you can get subtle perfume that’s just a light scent. I mean, I don’t know, personally, I think cologne on guys is just so sexy.
Marni: Oh, gosh, I think it just stinks. I mean there’s nothing worse than being in an elevator or sitting on the bus or something, and someone sits next to you with this, you know, cloud of cologne or perfume. It’s just so overwhelming. It makes me feel sick.
Amy: But what about those classic scents like Chanel Number 5? Don’t they just remind you of a classy, older lady?
Marni: I don’t know, I keep thinking, like, stinky, overwhelming, irritating. Kinda makes my eyes water.
Amy: Does it give you a headache?
Marni: It does sometimes give me a headache if it’s too overpowering. I can’t stand it.
Amy: Well, I think putting on a couple sprays of perfume for a date or something is just that extra little fun thing you can do to make it more special. But I guess I know from now on not to wear perfume around you.
Marni: I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

Amy says that perfume can be subtle and classy. She especially likes classic scents like Chanel Number 5. She likes it when guys wear cologne, and she likes to wear perfume when she goes on dates.
Do you like to wear perfume? Do you like it when other people wear perfume and cologne, or do you find it too overwhelming?
