You’re cooking dinner for friends and cut your finger with a knife. It’s not serious, but it’s bleeding and it’s important to be hygienic. All you need is a band-aid, but even if you have one, it’s probably in the back of the medicine cabinet. There’s nothing within reach in the kitchen. You can’t believe you don’t have a first aid kit in the house!

It’s not the law to have first aid kits in homes, but maybe it should be. Think about it: Headache? Here’s some aspirin in your first aid kit. Something stuck in your hand? Use these tweezers. Cut yourself? There are band-aids of all shapes and sizes. You can even put a kit together by yourself. If you think about it, it’s pretty smart to keep everything in the same place.

Find out what Devan has to tell Jeff about a time she wished she had a first aid kit in this lesson about good health.

Devan:  So, the other day, this customer came into my work. And he slipped and fell, and cut his head, and I went to the back and realized that we don’t have a first aid kit at our work.

Jeff:  Even if you did, do you know how to treat first aid situations? A situation that would require that kind of stuff?

Devan:  I’ve never taken a CPR class or anything like that. Have you?

Jeff:  I have several times. They make you renew your deal. But yeah, that was years ago.

Devan:  Did you find it very helpful when you took it?

Jeff:  In a way. I was certified. But I think if you ever end up in one of those situations, it becomes kind of an entirely different thing. But it does help to be trained.

Devan:  So, have you ever ended up in a situation where you had to put your knowledge to use?

Jeff:  I haven’t, fortunately. But I had co-workers who did. One guy saved a toddler from drowning in front of his mom.

Devan:  Wow.

Jeff:  Luckily it worked. He’s now a hero.

Devan:  OK, it’s official. I’m going to go sign up tomorrow.

Jeff:  You should do it. You’ve got a good heart.

Discussion

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Devan tells Jeff about an experience she recently had at work. A customer fell and got hurt, but she discovered that there was no first aid kit in the store. It’s obvious that Devan thinks that’s wrong, but she also admits that she hasn’t had any training to take care of people in those situations, anyway.

Jeff has taken many classes to learn CPR, but he’s never had to use it on a person. He thinks it’s important information to have, but Jeff believes that knowing how to do it and actually doing it are very different things. He had a co-worker once who had to use CPR on a child and it’s obvious that Jeff has a lot of respect for his friend’s actions.

Have you ever been in a situation when you had to use a first aid kit on someone, or use CPR to help someone who wasn’t breathing? How did it make you feel? Would you ever take a class to learn how to help other people in a crisis?

This year I have taken a first aid course after 15 years, because it’s so important to help others in an accident. And so much has changed in the past years. Unfortunately, most of the people are voyeurs in an accident. You can see it everyday in the news or live when you are driving with your car. Most of the people only look around, because they’re too afraid to help.I think a first aid course is so important, everybody should do one maybe all 2 years. And it should be paid from the goverment. Everybody needs help in an accident, everbody could help in that case. And the course isn’t expensive.

@Jobee: They make you go to the CPR class again and let you repeat the whole certification process, so that you´re up-to-date.

I have never Been in a crisis situation, and I thank God for that, for I wouldn’t have known the standard procedures in such a case. First Aid assistance should be mandatory in schools or college. When a life is at risk is esencial to act without having to wait for the paramedics. Yes,if I were offered, i would take a class.

Once I was accompanying a group of children to an amusement park. One of the children was accidently hit by a car while playing, and his head started bleeding. I wasn’t able to help him because I didn’t have any first aid with me. I also didn’t know what to do. Luckily, there was a medical team in the amusement park, I went to them and I asked  them for help.
Unfortunately, in my country even if you got trained to use first aid and to perform CPR, it is not easy to be certified. That means you can’t help anyone because if you do, you’ll be in a real problem.

I do think that is very very important. One day I intend to do, because nobody knows what is coming next. It’s better to be prepared for whatever appear.

I definitely agree with Jeff knowing how to do it and actually doing it are different things. At course before we got driver licence ,in first aid lesson we’re taught how to help someone who is wounded or injured.I think it didnt work well because nobody tried what they knew.we’re only told what should we in that cases.though i dont approve of such kind of education pattern .

In fact we should get some classes which are making us certified about it.At last we gotto do smth in emergency situations

I have never taken a class to learn how to help people in a crisis. But this lesson makes me think about taken a first aid class. Fortunatelly, I have never been in a crisis situation. But if I had, I’ll help in other ways like calling 911 or asking for help for someone who is nearby. I am not prepared so I’m afraid to get the situation worst if I try to do the first aids.

I’ve taken two classes of First Aid course. And I loved it. It was packed with very useful information. But, since it was intensive course and for only one day, the knowledge of providing the first aid should constantly be repeted. I have two books from different courses and from time to time review the procedure. Help should be done without delay, you should know step by step the routine and provide it quick, because the situation when someone is in danger all in blood already gives you shock and shock knocks out all your memory. So the steel nerves, self control and knowledge as though you do that, God forbid, every day.

I have been in a class which learnt us how to use first aid kit, I’ve learnt CPR, but I have never really done it.

I agree with Jeff, when you are in a situation of this kind, you might get confused and your mind may go blank, even if you had learnt what to do

I haven´t ended up in a situation yet where I had to use CPR on someone, fortunately. I haven´t even been in a first aid kit situation where I had to help someone. I took a CPR class once, though. And I agree that it´s important training, which in my case definitely has to be refreshed!

I haven’t taken a CPR class before, but I think training is totally different from the a first aid situation. I guess, first thing we need is calming down and finding the situation what’s going on there. so we can do react according to that,,,... mabye,,,it’s i guess the best way to get access to 911 as soon as possible…while making them breathe
