Have you ever gone to sleep feeling strongly about something, and then woken up the next day with a totally different feeling? Sometimes we know why, and sometimes we don’t, but it’s normal to change your mind or your opinion. It’s called having a change of heart.
We say it’s a change of heart because a lot of us make decisions by listening to our hearts. You don’t have to feel differently about a boyfriend or girlfriend to call it a change of heart, though. You might wake up knowing that you don’t want to take a job, or move to a new city, or even go to the gym. It’s still a change of heart. When talking about love, though, the expression is perfect!
Either Marni or Lily is having a change of heart about someone. Who do you think it is? If you keep reading, you’ll learn the truth.
3. Watch - Watch the video without reading the dialog.
Dialog
1. Listen and Read - Listen to the audio and read the dialog at the same time.

Rafael: So, Lily, I probably won’t be back until late. Are you sure you don’t want to go out with me tonight? Marni?
Lily: Yeah, I’m sure. I kind of just need to chill out tonight. But thanks, though.
Marni: Me, too. You go have fun!
Rafael: OK. I’ll see you guys later.
Marni: Bye.
Lily: See you.
Marni: So, what’s the story with you and Rafael? Do you still have a crush on him?
Lily: You know, I’ve kind of had a change of heart about him.
Marni: No kidding! I thought you really liked him. And I thought you guys were a good match, too.
Lily: I really do like him, but the more I’m spending time with him, the more he’s starting to seem like just a really good friend. And I’m OK with that.
Marni: Are you sure that he feels the same?
Lily: You know, I can tell that he’s kind of feeling the friend thing, too, because he pointed out a cute girl to me the other day. But honestly, I decided we’re better off as friends. And I’m not saying that to save face or anything. I actually mean it. You remember how I had that long list of requirements for a roommate?
Marni: Yes, that was a very long list.
Lily: Yeah, it was. But here’s the weird thing: Rafael has all of the qualities I’m looking for in someone that I want to live with. And I can’t really say that about anyone from my past. He’s perfect. Can you say that about John?
Marni: No. I adore John, but he’s far from perfect. He has to have everything just so.
Lily: Totally. And I think that maybe in the future, something could develop between Rafael and me. But for now, I’m just happy to enjoy his company.
Marni: Well, that sounds wise, then. I’d like to propose a toast to your change of heart.
Lily: To my change of heart.
Marni: Cheers.

Discussion
After Rafael goes out for the night, Marni asks Lily about him. Marni thought Lily had a crush on Rafael, but Lily tells her that she’s had a change of heart. She no longer thinks of Rafael as someone who she’d like to date. She thinks of Rafael as a friend.
Marni wonders if Rafael only wants Lily as a friend, too, but Lily tells her that she’s pretty sure they both feel the same way. And that’s OK with Lily. Rafael is the perfect roommate for her, and right now, Lily is happy to be friends with him. They spend a lot of time together and get along well.
Besides, who knows what could happen in the future? Rafael and Lily are a good match. Maybe one day they’ll start dating, but not now.
When was the last time you had a change of heart that surprised your friends?
