Is there a difference between relaxing and being a couch potato? If you enjoy chilling out after a long day of work, does that make you a bum? Most people would say it’s OK to take your mind off your job by watching an episode or two of your favorite TV show. As long as you’re not doing it all day, it’s good to take time for yourself.
If you live with other people, though, it’s important to pay attention to how much you’re helping out around your apartment or house. It’s not smart to let relaxing get in the way of doing your share of the housework, or your TV-watching will be looked at as laziness. Laziness is OK in small amounts, but it can definitely get you into trouble.
Is Jessica lazy? Or is it Lily? Read more to learn the truth in today’s English lesson.

Lily: Jessica, you are such a lazy bum. Get off of the couch!
Jessica: I’m just relaxing. I like to wind down after a long day.
Lily: You mean, a long day of being a couch potato? You’ve been on this couch for five hours.
Jessica: I’m chilling out. This is what I do. I’m just turning my brain off.
Lily: OK. Well, I think you need to be a little bit more industrious. What do you do all day? You just sit there. It’s not good for you.
Jessica: It’s entertaining. I’m just relaxing. You should try to relax a little bit more. You seem a little uptight.
Lily: OK. I’ll sit on the couch with you, I guess. Let’s just watch one episode.
Jessica: There you go. It’ll take your mind off of your busy day. You’ll feel so much more relaxed. And then maybe you’ll give this laziness a try.
Lily: OK. I’m relaxing now. Ready?
Jessica: Try harder.
Lily: OK.
Jessica: How does it feel?
Lily: Feels pretty good.
Jessica: I know. See? Being lazy is fun!

Discussion
Lily is not impressed by Jessica, who has been sitting on the couch for five hours. She thinks that Jessica is lazy and should work more. Lily doesn’t think that chilling out is a good thing. In fact, she thinks that it’s a bad habit.
But Jessica loves being a couch potato. It helps her to relax after a long day. She enjoys just sitting and watching TV shows, and she thinks that Lily would be happier if she joined her. Jessica thinks that Lily is a little stressed out and that Lily would feel better if she could learn to be lazy like Jessica.
When is it OK to be lazy? Are there times when it’s not OK? Do you take time to be lazy?
