Beyonce began to sing in public as a girl, and her group Destiny’s Child became famous in 1998. By 2003, Beyonce was making her own music, as well as acting in TV and movies. In 2008, she married famous rap singer Jay-Z, and the two had a daughter in 2012. Beyonce is involved in fashion, politics, and raising money for people in need. Marni: Oh my gosh. I was just watching that “Bootylicious” video from Beyonce. It’s so good!
Rafael: Is that the one where she says, “All the single ladies, all the single ladies?”
Marni: No, that’s “Single Ladies.” No, you know, her body’s “too bootylicious?”
Rafael: See, I know her image. I know that she’s very influential in her field, but obviously I don’t even know the names of her songs, as you just found out.
Marni: I think Beyonce is just amazing. I have so much respect for her, you know? She’s just self-made, she worked super hard to get to where she is, and I just think she’s great.
Rafael: Like I said, maybe not necessarily my cup of tea, but I think that she has a lot of self-confidence, from what I’ve seen. And if she has so much success, like she does, it’s probably well-earned.
Marni: Very true. Each song that she keeps coming out with, and her videos, and her concerts and things, I think she really tries to break new ground as much as she can. I think she’s very influential.
Rafael: All right. Let’s get serious, though. What do you think her net worth is, financially?
Marni: In the millions. 75 million.
Rafael: Easily, right?
Marni: Totally.

Discussion
Marni loves Beyonce’s music, and she has a lot of respect for the hard work Beyonce’s done to get where she is. Marni thinks that Beyonce is doing things that nobody else is doing, and that’s part of why she is so popular. It’s meaningful to Marni that Beyonce is a self-made woman, too.
Rafael doesn’t know Beyonce’s music very well, but he can tell that she’s an influential singer. He likes that Beyonce is confident and believes that her success is well-earned. Rafael is curious about how much money Beyonce must have thanks to her music, videos and concerts. Marni guesses $75 million or more.
Rafael and Marni agree that Beyonce is one successful musician. What do you think? Are you a fan of Beyonce?
