French electronic music duo Daft Punk has just released a new album called Random Access Memories, and it’s climbing the charts. The group originally became popular in the 1990s house music scene in France, and they continued to build a significant following. Daft Punk puts on elaborate live shows with many special effects. The members of the group often dress up as robots, too.
Of course, there are many kinds of dance music. Daft Punk’s electronica is only one example. If you don’t like synth sounds and repetitive beats, then they might not be your cup of tea. Still, they have had a major influence on artists of all genres over the last few decades. Find out whether Mason and Jeff are fans in this music English lesson.

Mason: (makes music sounds) Have you been listening to the new Daft Punk?
Jeff: Yeah, a little bit. I like them.
Mason: Cool. I do, too. I’ve got to get around to listening to the new album. It’s definitely cool to see them making a comeback.
Jeff: Yeah, they’ve always taken breaks between projects, which in a way I respect.
Mason: Yeah?
Jeff: They’ve gradually become more and more successful and, from what I hear, they usually invest any profits into their next project. I respect them artistically, as artists.
Mason: Cool. And it’s just a duo, right? Just two guys?
Jeff: Yeah. Two Frenchmen.
Mason: Huh. I grew up listening to them more in the 90s and stuff, and it kind of feels like a lot of where indie rock went with the synth stuff, that sort of thing, had some roots in Daft Punk. For me.
Jeff: They’ve been a big influence, to be the forefathers of lots of synth stuff, certain styles of dance music. They brought French modern music to the public’s ear, I guess you could say.
Mason: They’ve taken it around the world, if you will.
Jeff: They have. They’ve been there and back.
Mason: Get it? Because that’s one of their songs.
Jeff: I know.

Discussion
Mason and Jeff are both fans of Daft Punk. Mason hasn’t heard the new album yet, but Jeff has. In addition to liking their music, Jeff respects them artistically. He likes that they take their time releasing new music, in order to make each album special.
Jeff and Mason also talk about the fact that Daft Punk has been such an influence on other bands. Many bands started using electronic elements in their songs after they heard Daft Punk. The duo really brought synth music to a global audience.
Do you like Daft Punk? What do you think about electronic music in general? Do you like it, or do you prefer listening to music made with more traditional instruments?
