No matter how hard you might try, you can’t stop hearing about Miley Cyrus. She’s always in the news, either for her antics during performances, the pictures she puts on social media, or her crazy clothes. She likes showing her tongue to the camera, too. What’s going on with Miley Cyrus?
Many people remember her as a 14 year old actor playing “Hannah Montana” in a TV show by the same name. Hannah Montana was a regular school girl during the day, but had a secret life as a singer at night. Over the years, Miley Cyrus has been changing everything about herself, maybe because then people will no longer see her as Hannah Montana. Today she looks nothing like that young girl. She has a completely new style!
Do Gary or Marni like Miley Cyrus? You may be surprised! Find out by reading today’s English lesson about a popular celebrity.

Marni: Gary?
Gary: Yeah?
Marni: I’ve got that Miley Cyrus song “We Can’t Stop” stuck in my head.
Gary: I feel like she’s really gone off the deep end with some of her antics.
Marni: Really?
Gary: Yeah.
Marni: She’s such a sensation. And I think it’s kind of fascinating, because she was this teen idol. She had this hit show on Disney, “Hannah Montana.”
Gary: Holy cow, she did.
Marni: Right?
Gary: But now she’s everywhere just getting attention on social media, getting attention in the news. I want attention! I want attention! Because that’s what it seems like.
Marni: I have to say, I’ve seen a few interviews with her. I’ve seen her performances. I find her interesting. I think that it’s such a natural progression to go from this teen idol show…
Gary: Sure.
Marni: ... and you’re pigeon-holed as this pop singer. And then it’s kind of natural. You grow up a little. You want to sow your wild oats.
Gary: I get that. I totally get that. I don’t know how far she’s going to go, and I kind of feel like someone needs to pull her back a little bit and stop being so sensational.
Marni: I think she’s trying to be pretty true to herself and just express herself. I do have to say, the tongue thing?
Gary: Yeah.
Marni: I could do without that.

Discussion
Marni has a Miley Cyrus song playing over and over in her head. When she shares this with Gary, he says that he thinks that Miley Cyrus is acting a little crazy. Gary feels like Miley is trying to get a lot of attention, and he believes that someone should stop her from behaving so badly.
Marni isn’t necessarily a big fan of Miley Cyrus, but she supports how Miley’s trying to change the way people see her. For so many years, Miley Cyrus was the star of a kids’ TV show, and now she wants to be remembered for something different. What Gary sees as Miley acting crazy, Marni sees as Miley trying to express herself.
What do you think of Miley Cyrus? Has she been acting too wild? Do you like her music?
