Imagine you are running a race. You are behind everyone else, and you are probably going to lose. What would you do? Would you give up? Or would you hold your head up and finish the race, even if you knew you couldn’t win?

To hold one’s head up means to act with confidence and not let other people’s opinions affect you. It doesn’t matter that you finished last place in the race, as long as you finished. It is important to remember to hold your head up and be proud of who you are.

Actress Cameron Diaz has to hide in public sometimes because she is famous. But she wishes that she could hold her head up and smile at everyone.

When was the last time you had to hold your head up?

When we visited India last year, we all went to Thirupathi Temple, a very popular pilgrimage destination for Hindus.

Since it’s a kind of religious ritual for us to shave our heads there, I didn’t think twice when my father suggested this option to us.

We shaved our heads, prayed Lord Sri Venkateshwara and everything was just fine.

But when I came back home and looked at myself in the mirror I really freaked out! I just wanted to hide under the bed and didn’t want to come out until my hair grew at least a few inches.

After some time I realized that holding my head up and walking in the streets is better than hiding myself in embarrassment. And that’s just what I did for the next 2 or 3 months.

Imagine you are going in a road, the road that you have thought about before you start. Gradually you think that road is not what you thought about! You think if you come back your family and friend will blame you! And you lose your money and time!

What will you do? Continuing to incur further losses! Or being brave and take your decision to come back! Of curse you must hold your head up and coming soon the way back that you think is wrong!

We are human and sometimes we make mistakes. We must be brave to stop and start a new way and change our thought.

Well, I don’t remember exactly when the last time I had to hold my head up when it was supposed to be held down was, but there is a situation came to my mind speaking of that.

I was in one of my English course sessions, I used to be the best student in fact, and I’m not bragging about it, but my instructors were always saying that. So it happened that in one of the sessions we had a quiz about idioms, to see who’ll guess right first, and I was the highlight of the game, but one of my guesses turned wrong while one of my mates got it right. At first I got embarassed about it, but then I looked at it from a different angle, I’m a learner after all and I was there to learn not to show off my knowledge of the language. Remembering that, I accepted the fact and immidiately held my head up and cheered him, the one who got it right.

We have here something we say when it comes to failing which is “The honor of the attempt is enough” So you tried, but failed, but at least you overcame your deep fears and had a new experience and definitely learned something new! So why to hold your head down!
