In 2011, three university classmates created a new app called Snapchat. Like other websites and apps, Snapchat digitizes your life. It lets you share short videos and pictures with friends. You can follow famous people and your favorite companies. But unlike those other websites and apps, Snapchat is temporary. Your photos and videos disappear after people see them.
Wait, what? The photos and videos disappear? That’s right. Although you can save your own content, you can’t save other people’s content. For some people, this is frivolous. For other people, this is awesome. They can see life in real time as it happens. All of us at English, Baby! think Snapchat is great for language acquisition, and we hope to see you there soon!
Dominique just realized that she can follow English, Baby! on Snapchat. Listen to this English lesson to find out if you should follow us too.

Andy_H: Hey, Dominique. Guess who’s on Snapchat?
Dominique: Not me.
Andy_H: Wait, you’re not on Snapchat?
Dominique: No, I think it’s kind of frivolous.
Andy_H: How is Snapchat frivolous? I mean, first of all, you get to see everyone’s story on their lives. If anyone doesn’t know what Snapchat is, it’s this wonderful app where you can send tiny pictures or moments to other people. It digitizes your world and lets you talk to everybody else.
Dominique: So, English, Baby! is now on Snapchat?
Andy_H: English, Baby! is now on Snapchat.
Dominique: Wow, I hadn’t realized that educational content was on Snapchat. I think I might join and follow them.
Andy_H: I think you should. In fact, pull your phone out.
Dominique: All right.
Andy_H: And give me one second. There you go.
Dominique: Thank you!
Andy_H: You know, this is awesome because so much of language is just learning things moment to moment and talking in a really natural way. Personally, I think Snapchat is really nice for that.
Dominique: I know.
Andy_H: Now, language acquisition can come in six to seven seconds.
Dominique: Yes.
Andy_H: Nice Snapchat, Ebaby! Nice Snapchat.

Discussion
How many ways are there to learn a language? Can an app help you do it? Andy thinks so. He believes Snapchat is awesome for language acquisition. Why? First of all, it’s interesting. You see other people’s lives and share your own. Second, it’s quick. A snap is only a few seconds long, and you only watch it once. Third, people talk in a really natural way on Snapchat.
Dominique knows what Snapchat is, but she thinks it’s a little frivolous. Maybe, Dominique doesn’t want to see other people’s lives or share her own life on an app. When Andy tells Dominique that English, Baby! is now on Snapchat, she changes her mind. She hadn’t realized that this app can be used for educational content, too. Snapchat digitizes language learning in a fun way!
What is your favorite app? Do you follow English, Baby! on Snapchat?
