Jim Carrey has starred in some of the biggest comedies of all time. In 1994, he was in three of the most successful movies of the year: Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask and Dumb and Dumber. His zany acting style quickly made him one of the biggest stars in Hollywood.
Since 1998, however, most of Jim Carrey’s roles haven’t been zany – they’ve been serious. And, his films haven’t been as successful.
John recently saw Jim Carrey’s latest film. Listen in to his conversation with Miguel to hear what he thinks about it.

Miguel

John: Hey, I saw that new Jim Carrey movie the other day.

Miguel: Which one?

John: You know, it’s, uh, that one where he has the power of God. Is it, Bruce Almighty.

Miguel: Oh, right. How was it?

John: It was pretty good. It wasn’t one of my favorite Jim Carrey movies like Dumb and Dumber or something like that, but it was definitely entertaining. It had a nice little message to it.

Miguel: Well I was wondering about that movie, because Jim Carrey has made some serious movies, like the last two or three have been dramatic, rather than, you know, comedy. So, so I’m wondering – was it funny or is he still like a serious guy?

John: I’d say it’s somewhere in the middle between a, a slapstick comedy and serious movie. And so, it makes it a little bit more real, which is kinda cool in a way. But I like him in the, you know, the straight up crazy Jim Carrey style a little bit better.

Miguel: Right. I’m looking forward to his return to like the total wackiness. That’s what he’s the best at. I don’t know why he just doesn’t stick with it.

John: Well, you know, there’s another movie coming out called Dumb and Dumberer. Have you seen that?

Miguel: Oh yeah. That looks super good.

John: Why isn’t he in that one?

Miguel: It’s the same characters from Dumb and Dumber, but when they’re children, or teenagers or something, so they had to use younger guys.

John: Oh.

I’m not a Jim Carrey fan. His movies are OK, but I’ve disliked more of them than I’ve liked. Most of them are really stupid. I can understand why some people like him though. His comedy is really wild and crazy, so it appeals to people who are into that kind of thing.
I haven’t seen Bruce Almighty, and I probably won’t – unless one of my friends wants to rent the DVD sometime. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t see it. If you like Jim Carrey, you should definitely see his newest film!
