Once upon a time, a man had a dream. This man, a successful young cartoonist and film director, dreamed of a colorful land of fantasy, a place where imagination ruled and the heart could be young and free. He envisioned a warm place where people from all over the world could come and mingle with Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Cinderella and all the other characters in the Disney family.
This wonderful place, initially named Mickey Mouse Park, was a great success. As the park grew larger and more popular, it was later renamed Disneyland, “The Happiest Place on Earth.”
Listen to Emily tell Dave about her recent trip to Disneyland.

Dave: So, you just got back from Los Angeles?
Emily: Yeah, Orange County, actually. It’s a little bit south of Los Angeles.
Dave: What were you doing down there?
Emily: I went to go visit my cousins, and hang out with them. And, ah, did a little sightseeing, went to Disneyland.
Dave: Ooh, fun.
Emily: Yeah.
Dave: How much is it to get into Disneyland now?
Emily: It was $59.
Dave: Oh, gosh.
Emily: Not getting any cheaper.
Dave: So, tell me about some of the rides you went on.
Emily: Well, the first ride we went on was Space Mountain, and it was really cool. It’s my favorite ride. It was a good time.
Dave: I’ve never been to Disneyland.
Emily: Oh, really?
Dave: No, so I don’t know, like, I’ve heard stories about the big rides, um, Space Mountain, what’s the other big, ah, ...
Emily: Thunder Mountain…
Dave: Thunder Mountain.
Emily: ...Matterhorn, Splash Mountain.
Dave: Yeah.
Emily: Have you ever been to Disney World?
Dave: I haven’t.
Emily: [gasp]. Dave, you’re missing out!
Dave: I know, I know.
Emily: That is tragic. You should really get down there.

Disneyland is the world’s most popular theme park. The original park in Anaheim, California, has had over 515 million visitors since it opened in 1955. It has been so successful that satellite Disneyland parks have been opened outside of the U.S.
Currently, there are Disneyland parks in Japan, France and Hong Kong.
In the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is building what will be the world’s largest theme park (nearly twice the size of Disney World in Florida). The park, called Dubai Land, will cover 72 square miles (186 square kilometers) and will feature everything from amusement rides and water parks to desert safaris, hotels and shopping malls.
