Different types of music have certain moods attached to them. Punk is angry. Pop is either happy or sad. And metal is dark and evil…right?
The fast music played by Dragonforce actually isn’t dark at all. It could be described as epic or glorious. It’s sort of happy, but not the sort of happiness you feel when you’re in love. More like the feeling you get after you’ve defeated your greatest enemy.
Dragonforce has a new album called Ultra Beatdown, and the songs on it use the same formula of inhumanly fast drums and guitar and high-pitched vocals that is making this band more popular all the time.

Jason: Dragonforce is this British band and they pretty much play faster than anyone else. The entire time it’s just ridiculously fast.
Beren: Shredfest?
Jason: Yeah. And lead guitar the entire time. It’s unbelievably good lead guitar. Like, guitar harmonies throughout the entire song at top speed.
Beren: Oh my God.
Jason: What’s funny is that when you hear about metal that’s really fast, you usually think of it being dark, thrash or something. But it’s like pure light. Everything is really happy and stuff, sort of.
Beren: Whoa, weird.
Jason: They have songs about glory and victory.
Beren: What?
Jason: Yeah!
Beren: How do they look? What do they dress like? Are they like a theme band? Is it like fantasy metal?
Jason: It is like fantasy metal, basically, but they don’t dress like anything all that different. They just have long hair and the typical kind of metal clothes.
Beren: Hesh…totally heshers.
Jason: Oh, they have the hardest song on Guitar Hero, which is why they blew up so much.
Beren: OK, that makes sense. That’s awesome…the hardest song on Guitar Hero.
Jason: It’s unbelievably good. The one thing I don’t like about Dragonforce is I don’t think they have that much heart. It’s so perfect that it’s almost like it’s not human. It’s almost like robot metal just because it’s so flawless.

Discussion
Since Beren has never heard Dragonforce, Jason tries to describe their sound to her. Ultimately he agrees that they’re heshers who play fantasy metal, which means they’re influenced by Iron Maiden in addition to other bands. Of course they’re generally happier than most of them.
Most people who know Dragonforce know them from Guitar Hero. Their song “Through the Fire and Flames” is the hardest one on the game.
Can you think of another musical act that has an usual mood or tone for the type of music they play?
