Jason: Man, you’re so lucky. I gotta get a significant other like you have. It’s pretty sweet that you’ve found, like, the perfect person.
Marni: Well, I’ve been thinking about…Well, maybe, but I’ve been thinking about you and what about Devan? What about…What’s goin’ on there?
Jason: Well, I don’t know. I mean, we have been spending a lot of time together. You know?
Marni: Yeah.
Jason: But, I just don’t think she’s my type.
Marni: Why do you say that? What is your type? So, you like cheerleaders or something? Or sorority girls?
Jason: No. But, uh…I don’t know. I’m more into, like, like bad girls and stuff. She’s kinda sweet, like kind of girl next door, you know?
Marni: Well, but she’s, I mean…I would think…Bad girl? I mean, like, define bad girl. You just want someone who’s bad for you? Who’s mean? Or, like, you want…
Jason: Well, that’s often an unfortunate side-effect of dating bad girls, somebody who’s bad for me and mean.
Marni: Right.
Jason: But I just mean someone who’s, like…who has more of a dark side, more of a sense of danger. You know.
Marni: Well…Yeah. I don’t know that that stuff is necessarily Devan, but I think…I don’t know. She’s artsy. She’s got a lot goin’ on for her. That seems like somebody you’d be interested in…
Jason: But I’m also worried about though, like, what if, like…’Cause she told me that…that you know about the whole…the cancer thing. You know.
Marni: Yes.
Jason: And I’m worried that, like, you know, if we started dating now that it would, like, be based on that and then, like, if she…You know, once things go back to normal it would be, like, we wouldn’t know how to relate or something. You know what I mean? It just seems like an unstable foundation for a relationship.
Marni: OK. Well, I guess I can see that, but it seems also like there’s more to it. You guys have had a history and you’re helping her go through this, being a good friend, and, I don’t know, sometimes that can strengthen the relationship.
Jason: Yeah. I mean, you’re right. Like, the perfect person can be, like, right under your nose and you don’t know it.
Marni: Yeah.
Jason: I’m not so sure that it’s perfect for it. I don’t know.
Marni: That’s a tough one.

Discussion
When Jason tells Marni that he’d like to find someone as perfect for him as her boyfriend is for her, she suggests that he date Devan.
But Jason says Devan isn’t his type. She’s a little too sweet. Plus, he’s not sure if it’s wise to fall in with someone through a traumatic experience.
Marni points out that there are lots of great things about Devan and that she and Jason were friends long before she got cancer. As the conversation ends, Marni seems to have convinced Jason to think about it a little.
Do you think Jason and Devan would make a good couple? Is helping someone through a hard time a good way to fall in love or the wrong way to begin a relationship?
