In some cultures, the elderly are valued for their wisdom and experience. But in the US, it’s the young people who rule. And Americans will do almost anything in order to stay young forever, or at least look young forever.
But the hunt for eternal youth is nothing new. Tales of the fountain of youth, a magic spring which makes anyone who drinks from it stay young forever, have existed for centuries.
In the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz are searching for that magical fountain. The problem is, they aren’t the only ones who want to find it. The evil pirate Blackbeard wants to be forever young, too.
Hear Jeff and Mason talk about the latest Pirates, and the eternal coolness of Johnny Depp.

Mason: You know, Jeff, I gotta say, after the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie, I was about ready to call it quits. But Ian McShane is gonna play Blackbeard in the new one, so I’m on board now. He’s a phenomenal actor, and him as a pirate getting to play against Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow is just gonna be the highlight of my summer.
Jeff: So I actually watched the first one, first Pirates of the Caribbean last night again. And I’ve seen the other ones, but as they go along I just don’t understand them. They’re confusing to watch.
Mason: I think I probably agree with you. The first one I think was great, and the other ones were just kinda phoning it in, and they got more and more ridiculous. So at this point, I’m completely signed on for ridiculous, and I’ve just got this one thing that I want out of the movie, and I think it would be pretty hard for them to screw it up. Like imagine if they made a fourth Matrix. And you knew it was just gonna be really stupid and make no sense.
Jeff: It would.
Mason: But you wanted to see Neo do some cool stuff. Like, you would be OK with that.
Jeff: Maybe.

Discussion
Mason is looking forward to see the new Pirates of the Caribbean. He wants to see the actor who plays Blackbeard act with Johnny Depp. He loves the character of Captain Jack Sparrow and the way Johnny Depp plays him.
Jeff thinks the Pirates movies are confusing. He enjoyed the first one, but he didn’t like the later films and he doesn’t want to see the newest one. Although Mason agrees that the movies can be a little ridiculous, he still enjoys them.
The latest Pirates is about the fountain of youth. Would you want to live forever? Does your culture value youth, or the wisdom of old age?
