There’s nothing like freshly baked cookies to sweeten up your day and make your whole house smell delicious. But some people seem to have the magic touch when it comes to baking, while others struggle to get even the simplest recipe to turn out right.

Baking is different from cooking in that it’s not as easy to make changes to the recipe. If you don’t use the right amount of each ingredient, your brownies could fail to rise, or your cookies could come out of the oven hard as a rock. On the other hand, if you follow the recipe carefully, you should be OK. But as Ella explains to Marni, that isn’t true for everyone.

Marni:  Ella, I just baked you a batch of chocolate chip cookies.

Ella:  Oh, thank you. I thought you were going to say I would have to help you bake, because it would be a disaster then.

Marni:  Oh, really? You don’t like to bake?

Ella:  I don’t like to bake. I don’t like to cook. I just don’t have the patience to wait, and baking is a lot of waiting and watching. And also, I don’t like to measure.

Marni:  Baking, you have to be really exact, whereas cooking, you can be a little more spontaneous. Throw in a little of this, a little of that. But baking, you have to follow the recipe to a T. But I love it. It’s just so relaxing to me. It’s so rewarding to have your house smell like fresh baked cookies or bread or cake or pastries.

Ella:  I can’t do it. I mean, I love the end results, so that’s why I love to go to a bakery after someone else has done the hard work. But I myself could never be a baker. I don’t have what it takes.

Marni:  Well, it’s a good thing you have friends who like to bake. You sure you don’t want me to show you sometime?

Ella:  I’m good. I’ll just eat this cookie instead.

Marni:  OK.

Marni has baked some cookies. She offers them to Ella. Ella is relieved that she didn’t have to help make the cookies, because although she loves eating baked goods, she hates baking.

Ella says she is bad at baking because she is too impatient, and she doesn’t like measuring. To bake, you have to carefully measure out the ingredients. Unlike Ella, Marni thinks baking is relaxing and rewarding.

Do you like to bake? What is your favorite thing to bake?

It’s okay if you only see competition as fun. I think  your proposed scenario ( cake eating constest) sums it up very well, either the loser or winner would have had fun eating some delicious cakes.

I take it back, count me in. I ,Snoopy the Boy wants to challenge you Ryo in a cake eating contest. There should be a rule and one rule only : No crumbs left behind!

heehe (:

I remember very vividly my guardian’s baking. But what I remember even more was the spankings I used to get for sticking my fingers in the dough when I thought no one was looking. I just love cake dough, more than the finished product. My siblings loved the dough too, and our guardian would spoil us with it. But how do you satisfy three hungry sweet tooth maniacs? My guardian devised a plan just for that purpose. Now bear with me, because this is true. My older brother will get the mixing bowl, I would get the cake batter, and my older sister will have two spoons of dough that our guardian scrapped from the mixing bowl. And all three of us would indulge ourselves into a dough licking ecstasy, smiling ear-to-ear and raising our eyebrows at each other in satisfaction.

I couldn’t bake to save my life though, but I need cake in my life. I tried a variety of cakes. But I don’t care for Cheese cakes, I don’t get all the hooplas about it either, I find them a little off-putting for my taste.  However a fluffy carrot cake or a creamy butter pecan, always finds itself on my table celebrating who-knows-what.

A cake is a wonderful thing; it’s the life of the party. Birthdays, weddings you name any occasion and event a cake will only make it more enjoyable. Like a shooting star in a dessert form, you make your wishes upon it; you confide in it your deepest secret. You don’t consume sugar? Are you kidding me! Come on just a tiny slice, you know you can’t resist it. There’s a phrase I use quite often, and I believe most of you guys do too, “It’s a piece of cake!” but a piece of cake isn’t easy to do unless you  can actually make a whole cake  or have the know-how, the patience, the love and passion, and the anticipation of making someone happy and special.

I seize this occasion to salute all who can bake!

I don’t bite the hand that feeds me; I just bite the cake you hand me ( I just made this one up, hehehehe!)Tongue out

When my grandma was still alive, I always helped her to bake bread and cake and cookies. As a child I was very proud to stand in front of the porch holding a big bread in my hands and being photographed. But lateron I didn’t bake any more.

I also like cheese cake. My mother makes a good one. I’d love her to bake one for my next birthday.

What’s so special in the recipe of a New York Style cheese cake? Can you tell me the ingredients and the making, Buttafly?

Buttafly  ”the appearance”  of my Easter cake is not wonderful like the appearance of your cakes. I would be happy to let you taste them, but how? what way do you prefer? I like the name of the receipt “A la Lesya” – I was laughing Laughing

I wonder why this lesson reminds me of Buttafly :P  And it’s seems I’m not the only one, haha

I’m the kind of person who can mess up everything, even frozen food. But, sometimes, I sorta bake something that, believe or not, can be considered “edible” =/ So my mom and I have a deal: she cooks and I do the dishes. Fair enough, right? At least I’m not gonna starve to death.

Yes, the meaning is the same. I’m afraid the piece of Easter cake will be stale on its way through the “snail mail” Laughing

Buttafly, I agree with you 100%. We also have the same saying like “The way to the heart of man lays  through his stomach” :)))) – it is the detailed translation from Russian :)
