Every culture and country has their own distinct foods and dishes. In the world of Japanese food, one of their most famous dishes is sushi. Sushi began as a food sold in the streets in the 1800’s, but it is now known as a fancy type of dish.

In recent times, sushi has become very popular outside of Japan. People who enjoy sushi like it for its exotic flavors of rice and interesting use of seafood and other vegetables. But sushi isn’t for everyone because the most popular sushi is made with uncooked, raw pieces of fish.

Marni really enjoys sushi, but Brian is scared to try it. Find out more in today’s English lesson about a special kind of Japanese food.

Marni:  You know what I’ve been craving lately, Brian?

Brian:  Pizza?

Marni:  No. Sushi!

Brian:  Oh, fish?

Marni:  Yes, fish. Raw fish.

Brian:  But it’s just raw. It’s not even cooked.

Marni:  No, it’s not cooked. But that’s part of the experience. It’s exotic and it’s got such intense flavors.

Brian:  Every time I go, I always just like to have the ones that have vegetables in them. I’m a little scared of raw fish.

Marni:  Really? Is it the texture?

Brian:  Yeah, the texture is a little fishy. Sometimes the ingredients can be… Like, what’s eel sauce? I’m not sure that I want to eat that.

Marni:  I think it’s about embracing the culture and trying new things. And just being open to the experience.

Brian:  It is very exotic.

Marni:  I just think it’s such wonderful food. I feel like we’re so lucky to be able to experience it. Especially when you go to a good sushi place with a good sushi chef. It’s magic.

Discussion

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Marni really wants to eat some sushi. She enjoys the different flavors of sushi and the experience of going out to a sushi restaurant. Marni thinks that Brian should stop being afraid of trying new things and be open to the experience.

Even though sushi is popular, Brian can’t get excited about eating raw fish. He thinks it’s weird to eat something that isn’t cooked. The ingredients that are used to make sushi are too exotic for him.

Have you ever tried sushi? Why do you like or dislike sushi?

My dear friends!

Please dont think I deleted those pictures of poor sheep because of your comments or any other reason!

I deleted them because I know they were not nice for people and also for me!

It is talking about foods not politics! :))

Maybe I need to be Olya’s guest and try Sushi again! :)

Mahtab, many negative comments were stated here against sushi. It’s ok. It’s normal to express your opinion. I respect cultures, but, please, don’t force me to like what is against my nature!

The picture with the the sheep and brain on top of it is sickening. Yes, we eat lamb, but to decorate it in such gross manner is just a sheer mock to me.
Sushi are big time delicious! Every one loves them!!! Just because they delicious. Some of them, true, are very exquisitely done and look like little pastries. About raw fish, it’s kept in the fridge for some time before cooking to kill all the bacteria. So don’t worry about poisoning!! The only thing that can stop eating sushi is the severe allergy to them. Remember what happened to Hitch when he was on a date with his girlfriend?

Hi Mahab & S&W,

It’s nice to know that you both love vegetables and have respect for vegans. I don’t have anything against meat lovers either. I totally understand that each culture has its own special food/food habits that may seem bizarre to others.

Have a meat-filled day, both of you!
