Have you ever opened your mailbox to find an invitation to a wedding, an anniversary party, or a fancy charity dinner? Most likely, it didn’t look like everyday junk mail! When people want to make an invitation stand out and look nice, they often start with the writing.
Calligraphy is the hand-written lettering you’ll see on many invitations, certificates, and awards. It takes quite of bit of time to learn the strokes for each letter, and even once you know how to do it, writing individual letters can be time-consuming. Of course, printing cards on a computer is much easier than writing things by hand, but learning the lost art of calligraphy can also give you a skill not many people have.
Lily received an invitation in the mail, but she doesn’t know what to do with it. Find out why in this English lesson.

Lily: So, Jeff, I got this wedding invitation in the mail, and…
Jeff: Oh, yeah?
Lily: it was just this blank piece of paper with all this squiggly writing on it. It was so over the top, I didn’t even know how to deal with it.
Jeff: So, you mean somebody hand-wrote it?
Lily: Maybe. I guess. What is that called?
Jeff: Calligraphy.
Lily: Oh yeah! It was pretty and stuff. But I just don’t see what the point is when you could just print it out on a computer or something.
Jeff: It’s a wedding invitation, so it’s a special thing for the people getting married, so they created a special item to announce that.
Lily: Fair enough. But isn’t that kind of time-consuming, especially if you’re inviting 100 people to your wedding, to hand-write each single card?
Jeff: Well, they hired somebody for that, and they want to make the people invited feel special.
Lily: Maybe I should learn more about it, I guess. I never thought about that, making your writing actually look nice. Mine looks awful!
Jeff: It takes quite of bit of precision. It’s a very refined skill. It’s difficult, and it makes things stand out. I like it.

Discussion
Lily received a wedding invitation in the mail, and she isn’t sure what to think. She’s surprised that it’s hand-written. Taking that much time to write something seems over the top to her, especially when a computer would make the work go much more quickly.
Jeff explains that people use calligraphy to tell others about special events. Because it takes so long to do, handwriting is something that makes people feel special. Invitations stand out when they’re written by hand.
Lily listens to Jeff’s opinion, and she might even start practicing some fancy lettering.
Have you ever received a hand-written invitation? What does your handwriting look like?
