Everyone binges. You may not eat non-stop, but there’s something that you do all the time. Maybe you binge watch your favorite show, or binge read your favorite writer. It doesn’t have to be bad to be called binging. You just have to do it a lot and all at once.
We often binge when we’re feeling stressed out. It’s an escape mechanism we choose when we feel like we can’t get a grip on ourselves. But there are healthier ways to cope when life feels unstable. It’s important to stop, breathe in and out, and remember that things will always get better.
Rafael has been binging for eight and a half hours. What’s going on? Learn more in today’s English lesson about health.

Rafael: I have been eating since 5:00 a.m. this morning. It is now 1:33 p.m. What should I do?
Marni: You mean, you’ve been eating non-stop?
Rafael: Yeah. I’ve been just binging.
Marni: I guess so, man. You’ve got to get a grip! Get some self-control!
Rafael: I guess I have forgotten what those words mean.
Marni: Yeah. Why do you think you’re just binging? Are you stressed out? Is something going on?
Rafael: Sometimes when I feel unstable about my life, I just don’t know how to cope. I just have to eat and eat and eat. I think it’s like an escape mechanism. You know?
Marni: I would say so. Yeah.
Rafael: Do you want some pizza?
Marni: No, I don’t! In fact…
Rafael: Please. Don’t make me feel as lonely. Please!
Marni: Your binging, it sounds like it’s definitely stemming from a place of fear and anxiety. And I think if you just put the food down, take some deep breaths, and just maybe count slowly, and just try to breathe. I think you’re going to find that you just don’t need to keep eating.
Rafael: OK. You’re right. How about some tiramisu?
Marni: No, thanks.

Discussion
Rafael has a problem. He has been binging for hours, and he doesn’t know how to stop. Life is a little difficult for him right now, and his answer to this problem is to eat.
Marni thinks that Rafael is actually stressed out and not hungry. She tells him that he needs to show some self-control. If Rafael can stop eating, breathe slowly, and try to relax, Marni knows that he will start to feel better.
Do you ever binge? What do you binge on?
